The “HVAC Systems Design and Control” classes at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Extension focus on practical aspects of the art and science of Heating, Ventilating, and Air‐Conditioning (HVAC). The courses evaluate practical solutions for energy efficient and sustainable HVAC designs. The program is designed to provide an outstanding means of professional advancement for those who are directly or indirectly involved with HVAC systems, facility engineering, and building automation challenges. Each course starts with the basic fundamentals followed by practical application, real life examples and the most common design solutions. The curriculum focuses on the latest technology in HVAC practices and the most advanced energy conservation techniques. It also emphasizes critical do’s and don’ts and accepted rules‐of thumb checks in the field of HVAC and building automation.

This program is recommended for the professional advancement of HVAC designers and engineers, recent graduate engineers, facility engineers or for anyone involved with HVAC systems. It is also highly recommended for those taking the Mechanical Professional Engineering exam.



The “HVAC Systems Design and Control” Certificate, offered by the University of California, San Diego Extension, includes the completion of the five classes listed previously: 1) HVAC Systems Design; 2) HVAC Design Calculations; 3) HVAC DDC Basics (offered online); 4) HVAC DDC System Design; and 5) HVAC DDC Networking Design. The classes may be taken in any order. Classes fill up quickly, so enroll early!

Frank Shadpour is the Founder and President of SC Engineers, Inc. with over 30 years of mechanical engineering expertise. Mr. Shadpour is a Mechanical Engineering Graduate of the University of Southern California and holds a Master’s Degree from the University of Redlands, California. He is a registered Mechanical Engineer, LEED Accredited Professional, Certified Commissioning Authority, and an ASHRAE Fellow. An active member in both the professional and academic communities, Mr. Shadpour is the Program Chair of ASHRAE Technical Committee, TC1.4, “Control Theory and Application”; Instructor of “HVAC Design & Control” courses at the University of California, San Diego; Author of The Fundamentals of HVAC Direct Digital Control; and is also a past President of ASHRAE San Diego.
